Aubergine Restaurant opened its doors in September 1996 with a vision to create a gastronomic haven in an atmosphere of timeless elegance where diners could enjoy innovative and creative combinations that excite the senses and pique curiosity. We are proud to have gained a significant following from both within South Africa and abroad and it is always a pleasure to welcome back guests who share our passion for good food and wine. Aubergine has received numerous local and international awards and been consistently rated among the top restaurants in the country.

Heritage & Setting

Housed in the former 1830 home of the first Chief Justice of the Cape, Sir John Wylde, Aubergine is situated in the historic Gardens area of Cape Town. Recent refurbishments combined the old and the new into a stylish contemporary venue. The ambience is elegant and refined with the décor complementing beautiful yellowwood tables, original wooden sash windows and Knysna Blackwood floors. During the summer months, guests enjoy al fresco lunches on the lush terrace and magical dinners under the African stars. In winter a quaint fireplace provides a cosy atmosphere. Sophisticated, private dining areas are available for intimate dinners, birthdays, business functions and other special celebrations.

The Chef

Harald Bresselschmidt was born in the pristine Eifel Region of Germany close to the Belgian border. As a child he was strongly influenced by life on a working dairy farm, instilling in him a love of the land and an appreciation for fresh produce. Harald worked in restaurants from an early age spending time predominately in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and London before doing his Masters in Gastronomy. His cuisine is based on a philosophy of natural flavours and seasonal ingredients, and a number of his dishes are infused with Asian influences. His team, committed to detail and fundamental techniques, and the imagination and craft of his kitchen, create innovative yet discerning combinations and food experiences.
The Aubergine Restaurant represents a landmark of fine dining and exquisite cuisine in South Africa.  Chef Harald Bresselschmidt and his team invite you to join them for a taste of perfection in this award winning restaurant resting in the lap of Table Mountain.

Food

The Aubergine cuisine is based on a classical foundation with influences from the East and the West evident in many of our creations. We place an emphasis on lightness and balance to create a sophisticated blend of
flavours and textures to excite the senses and pique curiosity.  Our menus are designed to highlight the finest local seasonal ingredients available.  Fresh produce is sourced from an extensive network of trusted suppliers and local individual producers to ensure the origin of the ingredients as well as the integrity with which they are produced. Aubergine strives to adhere to sustainable seafood practices and, where possible, uses free-range meat and game and organic produce. Organic vegetables have long been an integral part of our menu. Vegetarians can find a varied and inspired selection and a vegetarian Degustation Menu is available on
request.
